After obtaining a master's degree in medicine with high distinction from KU Leuven (2012), Dr Michaël Knapen further specialised in anaesthesia and intensive care in the university hospitals of Essen and Aachen.
Since 2022, he has served as the medical head of operative intensive care at the university hospital of Aachen. In this role, he coordinated post-operative intensive care for every possible surgical discipline. He also provided specialised intensive care to cardiac surgery patients with possible extra- or intracorporeal cardiac support systems and was co-responsible for the care of patients in the burns centre.
