Anal abscess

An anal abscess is a pus-filled swelling near the anus or rectum. The abscess usually develops as a result of a bacterial infection in an anal gland.

Symptoms

The symptoms below may occur:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain and warmth around the anus
  • Sometimes fever, fatigue and general feeling of sickness

Examination

The diagnosis can be confirmed by a physical examination by the doctor. Sometimes an additional ultrasound or CT scan may be needed to assess the extent of the abscess and determine the appropriate treatment.

Treatment

Treatment of an anal abscess depends on the severity of the infection and the location of the abscess. In most cases, the abscess is drained to remove the pus and you are given antibiotics to fight the infection. Sometimes surgery may be necessary to remove the abscess completely.
