Bowel polyps

Bowel polyps are abnormal growths that form on the lining of the colon or rectum. Most bowel polyps are benign, but some can develop into colon cancer over time. This means an early detection and removal is important.

Symptoms

The symptoms below may occur:

  • Blood in the stool
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Abdominal pain

Cause

Bowel polyps can be hereditary and are more common in people over 50 years of age. A high-fat diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and little exercise can contribute to the development of polyps.

Diagnosis

Bowel polyps are often discovered during examinations performed for other reasons. To specifically look for colon polyps, a (virtual) colonoscopy can be performed.

Treatment

Treatment of colon polyps depends on their size, number and type. Most polyps can be removed during a colonoscopy. Larger polyps, or if there are many present, may require surgery.

Aftercare

After colon polyps are removed, regular monitoring is important to prevent new polyps from developing or to detect them early. Healthy diet, smoking cessation, moderate alcohol consumption and regular exercise can help reduce the risk of new polyps.
