Metatarsalgia

With metatarsalgia, you have pain at the ball of the foot, just before the start of the toes.

Cause

The problem can arise in several ways. The following occurrences may be to blame:

  • Sagged forefoot
  • Pinched nerve between the toes
  • Wrong gait pattern
  • Overload
  • Wearing the wrong shoes

Treatment

Orthotics with an elevation or cushion in the right place can better relieve pressure in the foot. Custom shoes with a stiffer sole can also reduce symptoms.

If an inflammation or pinched nerve is the cause of the pain, an injection may help. Surgical shortening of the metatarsal bones is sometimes necessary.
