Ultrasound with spotting (harpoon placement)

An ultrasound is an examination that uses sound waves to look inside the body. This is how we locate a tumoral lesion that is difficult or impossible to find by hand.

Course of the examination

An ultrasound with reperage (spotting) takes about 20 minutes.

Based on the generated ultrasound images, we locate the tumoral lesion. Then, using a special guide, the radiologist inserts a harpoon needle or marker wire into the lesion. This is done through a puncture through the skin into the lesion. Based on a new ultrasound, we immediately check whether this was successful. The surgeon follows the harpoon needle during the operation and can thus remove the tumor without damaging the surrounding tissue.

After the results are known in the lab, we send a report to the doctor who requested the study. Only this doctor can discuss the results with you.

For this examination you must always make an appointment at the radiology department (tel. 011 69 92 75).

Preparations

No specific preparation is required.

Aftercare

It is important to remain calm and avoid exertion so that the harpoon needle remains in the right place until the time of surgery.
