Children’s department (paediatrics)

The children's department has 23 beds, divided among single and double rooms, isolation rooms, a room for ambulatory care and a spacious playroom. A team of specialized paediatricians and nurses is available 24 hours a day to provide your child with the best possible care.

What can we help you with?

The children's ward is brightly decorated with warm colours, drawings and a large play area to help children forget as much as possible that they are in a hospital. Our priority is to reassure the children and make their stay pleasant.

As a parent, you are always welcome to visit your child, stay overnight in their room and share meals. In consultation with the nurse, you can also assist in caring for your child (e.g. washing, dressing, taking their temperature, administering medication, etc.).

To an examination? By car!

Patients who have to go to our radiology department or to our nuclear medicine department for an examination, can drive to the examination in a real VW minivan. In this way we try to make the visit to the doctor a bit more fun. The van has a remote control that the nurse can use to drive it, but children can also drive it themselves by pushing the gas pedal. For the little ones, the hospital purchased a cute little pushcart.

How will my child's examination proceed

The examination room in the children's ward is completely customized for our smallest patients, with an ergonomic examination table. To distract the children, they can watch their favorite show on a TV attached to the ceiling. After an injection they are comforted with a gift from the gumball vending machine.

The paediatrics ward uses nitrous oxide and even virtual reality glasses if this can help make the examination more peaceful.

With hand puppet Sam to the operating room

An operation is often a major event for your child. It is therefore important to tell children as clearly as possible what is going to happen. This reduces fear and usually calms them down. To reassure the patients before their operation, the nurse, together with hand puppet Sam, explains the route from the children's ward to the operating room. Depending on the operation, the children receive a sticker sheet with the most important "stops" during the route. After the operation, they also receive a "good diploma" from the nurse.

Playroom

The children's ward has a spacious playroom and a children's library. Additionally, there is a dvd player, a PlayStation and some laptops. If your child is unable to leave his room, you can request toys to use in the room.

In the playroom your child can play, draw, do crafts, read or watch TV with a play assistant in the morning. In the afternoon, you can play with your child here yourself. You'll also find puzzles, board games and craft materials. The playroom closes at 8 pm.

Every week (except during the summer holidays), the Mediclowns visit the ward. These visits are announced on the information board.

School visit

Would you like to visit our children's ward with your class? You're very welcome!

This is possible from March to June in the mornings on a day of your choice. The visit starts on the children's ward where hand puppet Sam is unwell. Together, we will examine Sam and, of course, help to get him better. During the visit, we'll see the examination room, the milk kitchen, a patient's room, the playroom, the medication area and more. You're also welcome to bring along your own (hand) puppet for us to examine.

The tour lasts about an hour and a half and is best suited for groups of up to 25 children. Is your class larger? Let us know and we'll see what can be arranged.
