Clavicular joint dislocation
The clavicular joint is the joint between the acromion (part of the shoulder roof) and the clavicle (collarbone). A dislocation usually results from direct trauma to the shoulder.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made on clinical examination in which the typical local pressure pain and elevation of the clavicle stand out. Additionally, an X-ray is taken to confirm the diagnosis. During this examination, the severity of the injury is made clear and will be classified.
Treatment
Usually the dislocation can be treated without surgery. For this, you must wear a sling for several weeks.
Surgery
Surgery is necessary when the dislocation is unstable or there is a risk of skin perforation. During surgery, the collarbone is stabilised. In most cases, this can be done through keyhole surgery (arthroscopy).
Rehabilitation
After the surgery, you usually wear a sling for up to six weeks. You can follow an orthopaedic rehabilitation for an optimal recovery.
