Hip injuries (orthopaedics)

The hip joint forms the connection between the pelvis and upper leg and consists of the head of the femur and the hip socket (acetabulum). The hip is a ball and socket joint and allows the upper leg to move in all directions.

Diagnosis

The orthopaedic doctor always first makes a diagnosis through a thorough examination with imaging (radiology) if necessary. Based on the diagnosis made, the specialized doctor prescribes a treatment that may include, for example, medication and/or physical therapy. At some point or for certain injuries, surgery will be necessary.

Common surgeries

The most common reason for hip surgery is usually wear and tear of the cartilage in the joint. Because the joint surfaces can no longer glide smoothly, movement becomes increasingly difficult and painful. The following procedures are used to correct the problem.

Arthroscopy (keyhole surgery)
Knee or hip prosthesis
