Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine bends sideways, creating an S- or C-shaped curve. This can cause vertebrae and ribs to deform.

What is it?

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine (backbone). In addition to curving, scoliosis can cause the spine to rotate on its axis. When bending forward, this abnormality is clearly visible as a bulge (gibbus).

Symptoms

The condition can occur during the growth spurt (in young people) and as a result of wear and tear. A small bend usually causes no symptoms; if the bend becomes larger, a hump can develop. This can cause one shoulder to be lower than the other. This can give fatigue symptoms or pain. A large scoliosis also changes the shape of the chest, reducing the ability of the lungs to work properly.

Treatment

Scoliosis is closely monitored. Especially when it occurs early in the growth spurt. If an angular position has developed, a brace (Boston brace) may be needed to stabilize the body. Only when the body is fully grown and there is a large angular position, surgery is considered to straighten and fix the spine.
