Sweat gland inflammation

Sweat gland inflammation, or hidradenitis, is a chronic condition that manifests as painful inflammations, lumps and abscesses. These inflammations occur mainly in areas where the skin rubs against each other such as the armpits, groin, buttocks and under the breasts.

Cause

Sweat glands and hair follicles are found all over the body. In the skin folds, these are present in higher concentration. You are therefore more likely to contract inflammation of the hair follicles in these areas. The exact cause is unknown, but smoking or being overweight can aggravate the condition. Shaving and wearing tight clothing can also trigger the condition. Because hidradenitis often develops after puberty, there may also be a hormonal cause.

Symptoms

The symptoms below may occur:

  • Painful bumps in the armpits, groin, buttocks and under the breasts
  • Inflamed abscesses
  • Scarring and skin distortion

Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. In a mild form, antibiotics can weaken the process. If the inflammation recurs frequently or gets worse then surgery is necessary.

During surgery, any abscess can be drained and the affected skin and/or underlying tissues can be removed. This can help prevent recurring infections and reduce scarring.

Lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and quitting smoking can help reduce inflammation. Wearing loose, breathable clothing can reduce friction and irritation of the skin.
