Microdiscectomy

Microdiscectomy is the removal of a herniated disc at the level of the low back using a microscope.

For whom?

Many patients with a herniated disc do not require surgery. When nonoperative treatment does not offer improvement, surgery may be considered. Surgery is also necessary if loss of strength occurs.

Surgery

In this procedure, the disc hernia is removed through a minimal incision. After removing the herniated disc, the nerve that was pinched becomes free. Other causes of pressure on the nerve, such as bony attachments, can also be removed during the procedure.

Recovery

A physical therapist will teach you back-sparing movements during your hospital stay to minimize discomfort. It is important that you alternate postures regularly during your recovery and take small walks daily. You should not lift heavy objects for the first few weeks. Your doctor will tell you which activities you should not do. After four to six weeks you can start physical therapy to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles. This too will be discussed during your consultation with the doctor.
