Polyneuropathy

Polyneuropathy is a muscle disease in which the signals from the nerve fibers are no longer directed properly. This occurs due to deterioration of the ends of the nerve fibers. As a result, muscle weakness occurs.

Causes

The following occurrences may be to blame:

  • Metabolic diseases (diabetes, thyroid diseases) and autoimmune diseases (Guillain-Barré syndrome, vasculitis)
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Alcohol
  • Chemotherapy
  • Infection
  • Heredity

Symptoms

Symptoms occur mainly in the arms and legs. You have numbness in the lower legs, feet, forearms and/or hands. Nerve pain can also occur in the form of burning, needle pricks and tingling. Your fine motor skills may disappear due to loss of strength in the limbs.

Treatment

Depending on the muscle groups that are affected, a specific treatment schedule is drawn up. In some cases we use electrotherapy to stimulate the muscles, but often functional exercises are the most effective. Rehabilitation is multidisciplinary and, when necessary, you may also seek the services of a speech therapist or psychologist to achieve your goals.
