Vertebral fracture due to osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a common syndrome that can cause fractures at the level of the vertebrae. These fractures are also called indentation fractures or collapsed vertebrae.
Symptoms
Fractures usually produce pain symptoms at the level of the back, which can cause decreased movement and shallow breathing. Read more about the development of osteoporosis through the link below.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis can usually be made from a classic X-ray. To be sure it is a recent fracture and to rule out underlying problems, an NMR scan (MRI) may sometimes be helpful.
Treatment
Relative rest and pain relief are always attempted first. In some cases, a three-point corset is prescribed. Persistent pain or further collapse of the vertebra may require vertebroplasty. In this procedure, cement is inserted into the vertebra through a small incision.
