Hand rehabilitation

The hand is a very important but complex body part. It allows us to feel, grasp, manipulate, hold and release objects. Injuries and limitations to the hand can have very profound effects on daily functioning.

Cause

Problems of the hand can result from injuries to bones and joints, muscles and tendons, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. These can occur after acute trauma or surgery, as well as from overuse.

Treatment

Depending on the location of the problem, an appropriate exercise regimen is created. The main objective is to get the hand back to function as quickly as possible and minimize residual damage. Hand rehabilitation is done under the supervision of a physical therapist and occupational therapist. Rehabilitation is started after referral from the hand surgeon and/or rehabilitation doctor. During the monthly multidisciplinary consultation between the doctors and therapists, your progress will be discussed.

Depending on the nature of the problem, rehabilitation can be part of an orthopedic or neurological rehabilitation program.
